What is a domain?

When we think about web sites, we think about a certain name, like http://www.xodmedia.com. The truth of the matter is a web site is actually a numerical address that looks something like: 192.168.1.101.

That number is actually a computer, or space on a computer, also known as hosting. So anytime I want to visit xod media, I could enter 192.168.1.101, which will take me to that space.

To make life easier, the internet people have created the idea of domain names.

You create a name you would like your site to be called and that internet address; 192.168.1.101 becomes associated with the domain name, like xodmedia.com.

Now when the xodmedia.com domain name is registered with the internet people, they tell all the servers around the world, so when some body enters http://www.xodmedia.com, they will go to the computer with address 192.168.1.101.
