Cheap Domain Names

To browse a web site the address of an associated domain name or URL must be entered. This is a word or phrase, usually memorable, which is connected with the nature of the site or the business or product behind it. There is an important difference between companies that specialize in cheap domain names and that offer free domain names. Free web hosting companies often offer domain names that are third level.

Names that are simply tacked on to the hosting company's domain name, so that will need to be typed in as well are what we refer to as sub domains, i.e. www.yourDomainName.xodMedia.com. The trouble with this is that it makes the domain name awkward to recall as it is longer then usual. Because of this it is usually best if a person buys their own domain name. With the number of cheap domain companies it is easy to get one that is economical.

The range in price for cheap domain names varies from free to approximately 10 dollars. Free domain names are usually only available in a bundle with paid for web hosting, so whilst technically free the customer is in reality still paying for it. Paying for a domain name usually means that you can get it without a bundles web hosting package. The prices paid for these domains begin at one dollar and go up from there.

The method of registration for a domain name makes no distinction between prices paid for the domains, so a cheap domain name is just as effective. When purchasing a domain name, checking that it is still available for purchase is the first step. To find out if the desired name is still available then a customer will enter the name into an appropriate text box and select the extension wanted. They will then be given a result, if the domain is still available they can purchase it, if not they must select another. Some company's are helpful and will suggest alternative domain names when the one chosen is unavailable.

Cheap domain names unfortunately come with some disadvantages - if the company is dishonest then the customer may never receive their requested domain name at all. The way these companies work is to tell the customer that there is an activation period for new domains, usually 2-6 days. Unfortunately after waiting a few days the domain is still not active, and it is no use emailing an unscrupulous company as they won't do anything.

Checking with the Better Business Bureau to see if a cheap domain name company is registered, is a good step to making sure that the company isn't fraudulent. The Better Business Bureau makes sure that companies are operating legitimately. Checking for traditional land based contact information such as an address and telephone number is a good second step to ensure that the cheap domain name company is not fake. Another place to check is message boards that are dedicated to webmasters, ask if anyone knows if the company has a good or bad reputation.

Staying clear of a company that does not have anyone to offer a good opinion may be a reasonable step. If you have found a legitimate and reputable cheap domain name company then there is no other shortcoming to using them as a supplier for your discounted domain name. The way that domain names work takes no account of how much they cost, so if a person can get cheap domain names through a legitimate company then they should take advantage of it.

The only time you would purchase a more expensive domain name is when somebody else manages the domain for you, especially if you have more than one domain and you'll need mulitiple domains all pointing to the same site, or multiple areas of your hosting. Typically it would be your web master, or web company. One note of caution, make sure you are denoted as the owner of the domain. Your web master will remain as the administrator and technical contact.
