How Do I Get Ranked on the Search Engines?

September 20, 2008 - If you are looking for ways to get ranked, or placed, on search engines, you are not alone, as many people want to do the same so that they can bring in quality visitors into their sites. It's not hard to improve such a ranking, provided that you comprehend how the rankings work.

Search engines are the main way that websites get traffic, and 60 percent of that traffic comes from Google. You need to understand how the engines find and present information to prospective customers if you are looking for an improved search engine placement. Both robots or the far more common crawlers/spiders are used to achieve this.

A robot, or spider, occationally visits your web site. It will start with the first page and then go through each link you have. It will make note of the links, pages, content, wording, structure and html code you have in the back of each page. This process is called indexing a web site.

The robots and spiders randomly return to your site looking for changes and updates it's index. It is not uncommon for some spiders to have the ability to index over a million pages a day, and examples include Excite, Lycos, Alta Vista, and Google.

To get an improved search engine placement, whenever someone types in keyword into the search engine, the search engine actually finds the information that is closest to what the searcher is typing in their internal index. If a searcher types that keyword and you have a page that matches the keyword, then your page should be listed in the results. Each search engine uses a different search algorithms to search their indexes, which means you will have different rankings on different sites.

If you are a new web site, it may take months before a search engine's robot finds you.

You can submit your web site address directly to the search engines with special pages they've provided, however this doesn't guarantee you will be indexed any faster.

You can speed up this process a couple of ways, one way is by purchasing a small amount advertising from the search engines; $5 to $20 worth. This will automatically get you indexed.

Another way is to sign up to the web sites analysis tools, like Google Analytics, which runs reports on your site, such as hits and visitors.

Another way to get ranked on the search engines is by sharing links with web sites that are already established. When the robots go through their web sites, they'll continue onto your web site, thus indexing you as well.

There are many other ways of getting indexed on the search engines, just remember to continually provide quality content and your popularity and rankings will grow.
